1. What is a Gynaecology or Fertility Scan?
A gynaecology scan is an ultrasound examination used to assess the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic area. It helps diagnose conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis which can be the cause for pain, heavy periods and may contribute towards infertility or the re-current miscarriage.

2. Types of Gynaecology Scans:

  • Transabdominal Scan: Performed over the abdomen with a full bladder.

  • Transvaginal Scan: Involves a probe inserted into the vagina for clearer imaging, typically more detailed than abdominal scans.

  • Irregular or heavy periods

  • Pelvic pain or bloating

  • Difficulty conceiving

  • Postmenopausal bleeding

  • Monitoring known conditions like fibroids or PCOS

  • Before fertility treatment to determine pathologies

  • During fertility treatment; measuring the endometrial lining, follicular tracking

  • If you have experienced re-current miscarriages

  • Diagnosing Uterine Malformation, for example; Didelphys, Bicornuate uterus which may cause miscarriage.

4. What to Expect During the Scan

  • Usually lasts 15–30 minutes

  • May be mildly uncomfortable but not painful

  • You might be asked to drink water before the scan (for abdominal)

  • A transvaginal scan requires consent and is done with privacy and care

5. Preparation Guidelines

  • Drink water for abdominal scans

Can you perform a 3D scan?

Yes we have a 3D Probe which is important to diagnose uterine malformations which is important to know if you have had re-current miscarriages.

What are the qualifications of your staff?

Our staff are a mixture of Sonographers who have PGcert Qualifications in Diagnostic Gynaecology Ultrasound, Obstetrics and Early Pregnancy.  Two of our Sonographers are experienced Fertility sonographers who can also take your bloods, we have contacts with a practitioner who may also be able to provide you with a private prescription.

Could this report be used by a fertility clinic?

Yes, most fertility clinics will accept our scan reports because of the qualifications our staff have but it is important for you to check first.  We understand that choosing the right fertility clinic is important for you due to big factorial considerations such as cost of treatment and travel time to appointments.  However, by choosing our clinic for your ultrasound scans and bloods you have a greater choice of which fertility consultant you choose to have your treatment plan with; for example you may choose a fertility clinic abroad.
